Taking The Leap

Brief Overview

She was scared out of her mind… and so was I. But we jumped anyway! I’ll tell you why that’s important, especially if you want to make massive progress in your business.

Backstory

My wife and I we went away for a romantic getaway. And the whole purpose of it was to relax and unwind. We had a nice little spa and then we also combined that with some adventures and thrills. When we were there, there was this thing called the Apex Jump. Basically, it had these different levels of platforms that you would jump off of and land into this huge pillow like thing. When you’re looking at it from the ground, it’s doesn’t seem like a big deal at all. But once you get up there and you’re on these platforms, it’s like “woah nelly, we’re actually quite high.

The way it works is you graduate from one platform to the next. At first, my wife didn’t want to do it at all. I was cheering her on “You can do this. I know you can!” and she eventually decided to jump off the lower one and was totally fine.

So now she’s got a little bit confidence and thinks “Okay maybe I’ll try the next one.” So she goes up to the next platform and she gets to the edge. She’s definitely nervous about this one. While it’s not that much higher, it’s just high enough that you feel it in a different way. It took a little bit of encouragement. She went up and came back a bunch of times and was super hesitant. Finally she’s like, “I got this. I’m going to go for it.” And so she jumps and she did it.

Now she had her final jump which was on the highest platform. She’s totally freaked out. She goes to the edge and she turns around right away. She’s like, “No, I’m not doing it.” And I’m like, “Babe, you got this. It’s going to feel the same, the only difference is it’s a little bit longer of a fall but everything is going to be totally fine.” I just kept reminding her about the progress she had made. She went from not wanting to jump off any platform to having jumped off the first two.

And so she works up the courage, she’s on this final platform and she’s standing on the edge. She was so terrified and scared but I was so proud of her because she finally just said to herself “I am doing this.” She went to the edge and she jumped! It was the greatest thing ever because she’s screaming all the way down but she got off of that huge pillow at the end and she just felt so good. It was in that moment that she knew she could do anything.

Big Idea

You Don’t Go Into It, You Grow Into It! [09:18]

Business oftentimes works the same way. You feel that fear, you move forward, and you do it anyway. I want to encourage you find opportunities to train your body and mind to feel that fear and do it anyway. Because here’s the teachable moment. Whether it’s in business or life, you don’t just go to the highest platform and jump. Sure, there will be the odd person who does it that way, but the way to continuously make progress is you don’t go into it, you grow into it.

Amy didn’t want to do any jumps in the beginning, but then she progressed. She went from one level to the next, and eventually made it all the way to the highest platform. So, I share this with you because as we’re growing our businesses it’s easy to look at what somebody else is doing and think “Oh gosh, I can never take that kind of risk.” But it just doesn’t happen that way. You don’t go into it, you grow into it!

Why You Should be Open to Coaching [10:20]

I encourage you to be open to coaching. If you’re left to your own devices in those fearful moments, you’ll freak yourself out. You’ll end up having those conversations in your head where all the negatrons start to come forward and you’ll just back away. You won’t do the things you know you need to do. You won’t make that call. You won’t talk to the person you need to talk to. You won’t make the decision you need to make. But when you’re open to coaching and when you have a supportive network, listen to that encouragement.

Keep Moving Forward [11:52]

If you want to make progress in life, you’ve got to keep moving forward. The moment you stand still in fear is the moment that everything comes to a crashing halt. Even if you’re making little baby steps of progress, that is far better than standing still.
